Alan Shearer raves about West Ham defender Aaron Cresswell
Alan Shearer has showered heaps of praise on West Ham left-back Aaron Cresswell for his performance against Everton.
The Hammers defender scored from a spectacular free-kick to break the deadlock in the first half, as West Ham won 2-1 in the Premier League on Sunday (03 April) at the London Stadium.
Jarrod Bowen, who made a return after a long injury, scored the winner for David Moyes’ side.
“Sometimes, you just have to sit there, hold your hands up and say ‘you know what, that is brilliant’,” said Shearer on Premier League Productions (03/04/22 during the interval).
“You have got no chance of stopping that, whoever is in goal and however far across your line you are. You are just not stopping that.
“It’s just magnificent. We saw Ward-Prowse with one yesterday, from the other side with his right foot against Leeds. This was equally as good from the other side from Cresswell. Magnificent. Superb.”
Quality
Cresswell has been fantastic this season. He has now managed six assists in all competitions so far, and is like a vintage old wine, getting better with age.
While he doesn’t overlap frequently and certainly not among the mobile defenders, he makes it up with fantastic deliveries.
Against Newcastle, Cresswell produced a superb delivery from a free-kick from which Craig Dawson scored, and he is becoming a set-piece specialist for the club.
The angle was perfect for him, but it still required a great bit of skill to execute. Cresswell bent the ball perfectly leaving Jordan Pickford no chance of saving that.
David Moyes should still look to sign another left-back in the summer, with Arthur Masuaku hugely disappointing this season.
Ben Johnson can also play as left-back, but Moyes should look to sign a natural left-footed full-back who can be a long-term replacement for Cresswell.
