Rob Green and Martin Tyler hail West Ham playmaker Manuel Lanzini after goal v Manchester United

Manuel Lanzini stunned Old Trafford into silence on Wednesday night with an early goal in the League Cup clash between West Ham and Manchester United.

The Argentine, 28, struck a ninth-minute opener for a much-changed Irons side, with David Moyes making 10 changes to the team that lost 2-1 on Sunday.

Speaking during live commentary for Sky Sports, Tyler was full of praise for the playmaker.

“In the case of Lannzini, form is temporary, class is permanent,” Tyler said.

“It’s a lovely touch, he passed it into the bottom corner.”

Ex-Irons shot-stopper Rob Green added: “Scorer of the spectacular, of course the one against Tottenham.”

Still got it

Lanzini doesn’t turn 29 until February, but it’s fair to say his Irons career has been on the downturn in recent years.

He was a star during his early days after joining in 2015, scoring 19 Premier League goals across his first three seasons.

However, injury struck during the 2018/19 campaign, and his wondergoal against Spurs last season remains his only league goal since.

Lanzini struggled against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League last week, and he was taken off early in the second half as concerns over his discipline started to grow.

However, he served a reminder of his talents at Old Trafford on Wednesday and showed he can still have a big role under David Moyes in this exciting Irons side.

In other West Ham news, Martin Tyler was furious with Manchester United after an incident involving an Irons player on Wednesday.
