West Ham United edged a thrilling contest against Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday, but Nuno Espirito Santo was never truly comfortable.

The Hammers had skipper Jarrod Bowen to thank for the rarest of away wins in this fixture.

Bowen struck twice, including 13 minutes from time to earn the Irons a third win in a row and one that takes them top of the Championship.

West Ham went 2-1 down after taking the lead through Bowen, but levelled via Konstantinos Mavropanos and then scored the only goal of the second half.

Bowen perhaps should have rounded off his hat-trick, and West Ham's failure to score a fourth left them hanging on at the end.

It was in the tense finale that Nuno was left unhappy with substitute Joel Veltman.

Veltman was brought on shortly before the hour mark and was credited with the assist for Bowen's winner.

However, with four minutes of added time up at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, the summer signing produced a shocking piece of defending.

A simple ball to deal with was not controlled and Bolton went on to win a corner.

That allowed Bolton keeper Gavin Bazunu to go up as the hosts chucked everything at West Ham, but thankfully it came to nothing.

Speaking on Sky Sports' live coverage of the game, co-commentator Dave Edwards pointed out that "Nuno [is] not happy at all" with Veltman.

The defender will just be grateful Bolton were unable to make the most of the late opportunity.

Now they have found their rhythm, though, that projection will no doubt continue to climb.

All that ultimately matters is the Irons just go back up, regardless of by how many points.
