Edvin Austbo gets it all wrong as West Ham scrape past Bolton Wanderers

Edvin Austbo was not one of West Ham's star performers in the narrow 3-2 win over Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday.

The Norwegian was signed from Viking in a £12million deal in the latter stages of the transfer window.

He managed a goal and an assist against Derby last time out, suggesting that he had the potential to take the Championship by storm.

The clash against the Greater Manchester side was his third opportunity in the league, and he struggled this time around, with Jarrod Bowen scoring twice and Konstantinos Mavropanos getting the other.

The 21-year-old was replaced by Manor Solomon in the 58th minute at the Toughsheet Community Stadium as Nuno Espirito Santo sought more from his forwards.

Austbo started on the left flank ahead of Solomon, but it was not the right call by Nuno.

The winger was described as "energetic" by Nils Koppen when he signed, but the data suggests a weak display.

He failed to create a single chance in the contest, while his fellow winger Bowen created two.

Austbo only managed 27 touches, with three coming in the opposition box and that led to one shot, and it was off target.

The new man made three defensive contributions, with two tackles and one clearance in a tough evening.

He got it all wrong, and given what his replacement did, his performance may have consequences.

Why Manor Solomon's showing makes Austbo's task difficult

Given that Solomon is his competition on the left side of the attack, he needs to consistently perform.

Normally, a young attacker having one game off the pace would not be an issue, but the former Tottenham man is an experienced operator.

That was evident when he came off the bench, as he made two chances and had one shot, beating Austbo's tally with just 16 touches of the ball.

The Israeli winger nearly picked out Bowen in the 80th minute, but his pass was just ahead of his teammate, and Gavin Bazunu collected it, and he managed it again in the late stages.

Nuno will be having second thoughts about his preferred option on the left flank after the showings from both men.
