Rob Green calls out West Ham 'mess' vs Millwall, Arne Engels involved

West Ham United looked clueless in the first half against Millwall on Saturday.

The Hammers were all over the place defensively at The Den on Saturday afternoon before waking up.

The Irons came back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw on 19 September in the first Dockers derby for 14 years.

Long throws from Lyndon Dykes seemed too much for Nuno Espirito Santo's team to handle.

Alex Neil must have been pleased with his side's performance after the opening 45 minutes, and the East London outfit's defensive frailties played a massive role.

Mohamadou Kante and Konstantinos Mavropanos saved the day for the visitors, but the Portuguese manager must go back to the drawing board after what was seen at The Den.

Jarrod Bowen was anonymous against Millwall and his inability to have an impact clearly affected the Hammers.

The Irons were on the back foot for most of the first half, and the two goals came from situations that could've been avoided.

Caleb Taylor gave the hosts the lead in the 16th minute, highlighting the indecision in the East London outfit's defensive ranks.

An overload at the near post let the Lions take advantage, with Nuno's team's lack of communication and responsibility evident.

Camiel Neghli's second goal came from a similar situation, with Bowen weak in his challenge.

Speaking on Sky Sports Football at half-time, Rob Green said: "You have to say that West Ham are going zonal marking, and [Arne] Engels is trying to take responsibility because Mavropanos is off the pitch.

"He has said I'm going to drop in where he should be along the backline, but actually it's just overloaded with bodies and they get in each other's way.

"And from that point, it's a mess. How many times in that first half did we see a set-piece where West Ham were second to the ball, and they were relying on the goalkeeper?"

How Nuno Espirito Santo got his starting line-up wrong vs Millwall

Divine Mukasa started as the deepest-lying midfielder for West Ham at the Den.

While the 19-year-old had moments where he controlled the game, Nuno left the backline exposed, with no defensive solidity in midfield.

Jarrod Bowen was also left stranded in his own half for most of the first half and couldn't progress forward when he got the ball.

Nuno desperately needs an out-and-out number six if he's determined to stick with the current formation.

Edson Alvarez and Soungoutou Magassa are still at the club and it makes sense for the Portuguese manager to use them as long as the club are paying their wages.
