Konstantinos Mavropanos singled out in Greece vs Netherlands as West Ham star in flashpoint
West Ham United defender Konstantinos Mavropanos was in action for Greece against the Netherlands on Thursday.
The 28-year-old defender has made a superb start to his Championship campaign with the Hammers.
In seven league appearances he's scored four goals, and is playing the best football of his Irons career at present.
As such, he entered into this first international break of the season full of confidence with his Greek side.
Ivan Jovanovic's team enjoyed good wins over Serbia and Germany prior to Thursday night's home clash with the Netherlands.
Mavropanos and his comrades were held to a 2-2 draw in Thessaloniki, and the West Ham defender had a role in the Dutch's first goal.
What has been said about Konstantinos Mavropanos' role in Netherlands goal?
By half-time, Greece entered the break two goals to the good against the Netherlands.
However, the Dutch came flying out the traps in the second half, applying lots of pressure on the Greek defence.
Eventually that told on 59 minutes, as Virgil van Dijk headed home powerfully from a corner.
Reporting for Greek news outlet Gazzetta, Dimitris Tomaras picked out Mavropanos being the last Greece player to try and clear the ball before it found Van Dijk.
"Mavropanos was the last to jump to clear but couldn't find the ball. Here Van Dijk's class spoke," he said.
Indeed, Mavropanos did appear to mistime his attempted clearance, seemingly losing the flight of the ball in the air.
Aside from this one moment he'd potentially want back, how did the West Ham defender fare overall in the game?
How did Mavropanos get on against ex-West Ham comrade?
There was an interesting West Ham-related sub plot to Greece's clash with the Netherlands.
It revolved around Mavropanos going up against his former Hammers teammate Crysencio Summerville, who started in attack for the Dutch.
Per FotMob, Mavropanos had the most defensive contributions of any player on the pitch on Thursday night with 17.
He also completed 96 per cent of his passes, made 10 clearances, five blocks, two recoveries and was accurate with his two long ball attempts.
Summerville, meanwhile, kept up his end of the bargain in terms of making this storyline live up to the hype for West Ham fans watching.
The Al Hilal winger took the most touches in the opposition box of any player with 10, and also took the most shots in the game with three.
He completed 91 per cent of his passes, created one chance, attempted nine dribbles, won nine ground duels and made four tackles.
To both player's credit, they put on excellent performances for their respective nations, but it was Mavropanos who takes the bragging rights.
