How Niclas Fullkrug has beaten two years at West Ham in only five games

Niclas Fullkrug will always go down as a huge flop at West Ham United.

The German international is still technically owned by the Hammers, but won't likely ever play for them again.

Currently on loan at where it all began, Werder Bremen, it's his second spell away from the London Stadium already.

Fullkrug also went to AC Milan for the second half of last season, and that went as expected, with only one goal.

With his contract expiring in June 2027, the clock is ticking on his future with West Ham.

But, developments in Germany may have sealed his next contract already.

How did Fullkrug perform at West Ham?

Everybody, including the striker, is trying to forget about those dreaded two seasons in east London.

Tim Steidten won't be forgiven over his decision to spend £27million on a 31-year-old from Dortmund.

He was instantly out of his depth in the Premier League and England, with his physical nature getting out-run and embarrassed by defenders.

In his first year in the Premier League, Fullkrug scored three goals in 18 appearances, and they remain his only successes.

One outing in each of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup returned nothing, while nine appearances in all competitions in his second season led to zero goals.

Julen Lopetegui and Graham Potter could put much of their sackings down to the failures of the striker, while Nuno Espirito Santo got rid quickly.

How has Niclas Fullkrug done at Werder?

Weirdly, very well.

He didn't even look like a footballer in England and the Premier League, while he's back in the groove immediately in Germany.

Some players are just suited to certain leagues and countries, and this couldn't be any more true for Fullkrug.

Four games in the Bundesliga and one in the DFB Pokal have seen the striker already score four goals, one more than his time with West Ham.

He's done that in 366 minutes of action.

Compare that to his three goals with the Hammers, and they came in 1,290 minutes, which is mindblowing.

With his contract up next summer, West Ham will actually be happy he is finding form, as they can get rid as soon as that deadline comes around.
