West Ham United waste money with transfer risk on Jesse Lingard – Finance Expert
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium...
Dan Plumley has insisted that the Jesse Lingard saga at West Ham United this summer will have resulted in the club wasting money in the end.
The England international was back training with the squad at Rush Green, but did not earn a contract, something that cost the club thousands with hotel and travel costs [Daily Mail].
The finance expert admitted that looking back in hindsight, it could easily have paid off, but in the end, it didn’t work out and ended up in a small wasted cost to the club.

“You’re viewing these things in hindsight because if it goes the other way and you take a gamble and he gets to that level, you look at it and think it was the worth the investment,” he exclusively told West Ham Zone.
“Now, you’re looking at footing the bill for that and it’s not paid off.
“In the grand scheme of things, given West Ham with Premier League revenues and European success over the past few years, it will be a very small part of the big picture of the revenue line and the cost line, but of course, if you don’t have to spend that money or you don’t want to as it hasn’t worked then you’ve saved money that way.

“It’s just another example of the risk of the transfer system, and if it comes off then great and sometimes it doesn’t work out, this is a little bit of money that has been wasted that hasn’t quite worked out.”
