West Ham United told to cut ties with Kalvin Phillips as news emerges on Thursday
Frank McAvennie has told West Ham to send Kalvin Phillips back to Manchester City as he does not fit into David Moyes’ plans at the London Stadium.
The former West Ham man insisted the midfielder has been trying too hard to impress which has resulted in things going against him, but reiterated that he is not good enough.
This comes shortly after it was confirmed that Phillips had not been called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad to face Belgium and Brazil.
McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – questioned why the Hammers are still paying Phillips’ wages given his disastrous run of form.
“It can’t be a lack of game time now and it’s not the manager’s fault, he’s just not hit the ground. He’s not done it,” McAvennie shared.
“There’s a reason he went to Man City and couldn’t get a game. He obviously didn’t fit into that team and he’s not fitting into David Moyes’ team. He came in and tried too hard and sometimes when you try too hard things go against you. That’s what’s happened.
“I would just send him back. Why are we paying his wages? Just go back and let them take up the wages again because if he’s not playing, he’s not one of the players for next year. Unless Moyes wants him for next year and he’s going to be an integral part of the team.
“That might work because he likes to sit in, doesn’t he? If he’s in the centre and lets all the other boys go and play then that could work. Maybe that’s what David’s got in mind.”
Kalvin Phillips is not good enough for West Ham
The midfielder has received plenty of criticism for his performances at the London Stadium after several mistakes including picking up a red card against Nottingham Forest, and now West Ham have been told to send him back to Manchester City.
Having been left out of the latest England squad, which will come as yet another blow to the Hammers loanee, he must now look to improve his form if he wants to stand a chance of making it to the European Championships this summer.
It is almost inarguable that, as McAvennie insisted, Phillips has not justified his high wages since joining West Ham. Poor performances have even led Graeme Souness to question whether he is even Premier League quality, as the criticism of his displays continues.

The suggestion that a new role and full pre-season could get the best out of him is fair. He clearly has talent, but he must start showing it soon if he wants to convince both Moyes and Southgate that he is worth the investment.
