West Ham United to sign new striker as Jon Dagur Thornsteinsson transfer update emerges
Frank McAvennie has urged West Ham to focus on signing a new centre-forward after the club were linked with OH Leuven’s Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson.
According to The Sunday Mirror [16 June, page 72], the Hammers have joined the race to sign the Icelandic attacker, who scored against England in a friendly before Euro 2024 kicked off.
While the 25-year-old looks to be an exciting prospect, with Leicester and Newcastle interested, the Irons have been urged to stay focused on signing a new striker.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I think they do need some younger players, but it depends on the manager. We got rid of Benrahma, who I thought was a great player. He never got a game so we got rid of him for some reason.
“I don’t want Bowen to return to midfield. I like him up front, playing off the striker. I want Bowen to be there, coming across the box. That’s where he plays best. I like Bowen on the wing. But they want to bring more in?
“I think we need a centre-forward. If Bowen isn’t going to play there, Antonio isn’t going to be there all season because of his injuries.”
West Ham United need new striker ahead of 2024/25 campaign
Bowen was often utilised by David Moyes in the striker position due to the club’s lack of options in attack, especially once Michail Antonio was ruled out through injury.
The Englishman was the highest goalscorer in all competitions, with 20 goals and a further 10 assists, with Antonio, the club’s favoured natural striker, only managing to bag seven goals all season.

The Irons have already been linked with a plethora of strikers, with AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham and Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri among the potential suitors this summer. [GiveMeSport]
If the Hammers were to secure the signature of either of those players in the summer transfer window, the whole team could be tied together ahead of Julen Lopetegui’s first season in charge.
