West Ham United to shelve Reiss Nelson transfer as squad issue identified

Frank McAvennie does not believe West Ham need to sign Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson with the number of talented wingers already in the squad.

The Gunners are demanding between £15million and £20million to allow the 24-year-old leave this summer, according to The Mirror, with the Hammers “leading the race”.

With Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus all at Julen Lopetegui’s disposal, and the addition of Luis Guilherme, Nelson would likely be a backup player next season and McAvennie thinks they should shelve plans to bring him to the London Stadium.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “Do we really need more wingers? Kudus plays on the wing, Bowen is a natural winger, and Paqueta plays out there too. I don’t know if we need wingers.

“Plus, if he’s not going to get a game for Arsenal, why should he get one for West Ham? You want players to fight to get into the team, but if he’s not good enough, he’s not going to make it at West Ham.”

West Ham United urged to avoid Reiss Nelson transfer

Given the attacking talent of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard at the Emirates Stadium, it is no wonder why the player struggles for game time.

While he does have 41 appearances to his name since returning from a season-long loan at Feyenoord in 2022, Nelson made just one Premier League start last term.

The winger always seems to bring a lot of energy onto the pitch, but with the amount of talent at the London Stadium, he could be in a similar position next season too if he makes the switch.

Reiss Nelson is likely to leave Arsenal this summer for regular football

It does not seem worth splashing out money on someone who will likely occupy the bench for much of the campaign, the Hammers need to focus on adding even more quality to their starting line-up.

There has been a mixed reaction to the transfer link, but the overall consensus would suggest fans do not want to see Nelson arrive at the London Stadium.
