West Ham United to keep Flynn Downes as Fabrizio Romano issues transfer update

Frank McAvennie believes West Ham need to keep Flynn Downes rather than target Marseille-bound Ismael Kone from Watford.

According to The Athletic [23 June], the Hammers had “taken note” of the midfielder’s performance as Canada played France in June, though the club now seem to have missed out on the transfer.

Marseille have agreed a deal to sign the 22-year-old for £10.6million, joining the Ligue 1 club on a five-year contract [Fabrizio Romano]. However, McAvennie is not worried after the club were beaten to the punch.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, he said: “We’ve got Downes – he’s a good player. If he stays, West Ham have a couple of good players in that position. But to bring players in, you’ve got to sell players.

“I don’t know what this new manager wants. If he’s a good box-to-box midfielder, do we need another one like that? No. There are players at the club that can do that. We need players who can actually tackle and put a foot in. They’re good at arriving in the box but they’re not good under the cosh.”

West Ham United urged to keep Flynn Downes as Ismael Kone miss emerges

Downes’ future is currently up in the air, having experienced a brilliant season away on loan with Southampton and making it clear he would like to return.

However, with Julen Lopetegui now at the helm of the London Stadium, the midfielder’s departure may not be so straightforward, with the manager wanting to get to know his squad before releasing players.

The 25-year-old was an important part of the Saints’ promotion to the Premier League last season, making 33 league appearances.

But considering Edson Alvarez is the only defensive midfield option at the club and is now injured, he could be needed next season as the Hammers attempt to rebuild following David Moyes’ exit.
