West Ham United to hand Alexander Sorloth redemption with new transfer

West Ham could hand Alexander Sorloth a second chance at Premier League glory following a spell with Crystal Palace, Frank McAvennie has said.

The now-26-year-old striker arrived at Selhurst Park in 2018, playing 20 games for the Eagles. He managed just one goal, and two loan spells, before joining RB Leipzig in 2020.

According to Caught Offside [17 July], the Hammers are preparing to offer the current Villarreal forward a contract until 2030 to get a deal over the line this summer despite his failed venture in the Premier League.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “It’s different football in La Liga – it’s much slower, you get time on the ball. It’s hectic in the Premier League.

“He may have learned from his fall from grace at Crystal Palace, though. It clearly didn’t dampen his confidence because he went on to be one of the top goalscorers in La Liga. Maybe he deserves another chance, but does the manager want a big guy up front?

“When you’ve got someone like that in the team, you tend to lump it forward. I don’t think it’s West Ham’s way but it can release pressure.”

West Ham United to take chance on Alexander Sorloth

While Sorloth’s time in the Premier League was not a successful one by any means, he has certainly come on leaps and bounds since that time, especially in La Liga.

The Norway international notched 23 goals in 34 league matches, finishing as the second-highest goalscorer in La Liga last season, only to Girona’s Artem Dovbyk.

Julen Lopetegui is clearly attempting to address the forward position at the London Stadium, with Danny Ings and Michail Antonio currently the only two options available.

Sorloth could be the out-and-out striker that the new manager is looking to add to the squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
