West Ham United players blasted for being ‘on the beach’ against Manchester City
Frank McAvennie says West Ham United’s players “gave up” and were “on the beach” in their final game of the season against Manchester City.
The Hammers were beaten 3-1 in David Moyes’ last game in charge, with Phil Foden opening the scoring inside the first two minutes and adding to his tally shortly afterwards before Rodri put the game to bed shortly before the hour mark.
And McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – feels the Hammers could have “gone for it” more.
“I think they gave up before they got there,” McAvennie said.
“I think some of the boys were on the beach, to be honest with you. I felt it could have been a lot worse. But once Kudus scored, they were a wee bit nervy, Man City, at 2-1.
“[West Ham] could have [gone] for it. It’s alright saying, ‘We didn’t want Arsenal to win [the Premier League]’, but that’s not what football’s all about.“
Could West Ham United have put up more of a fight against Manchester City?
West Ham were certainly outplayed at the Etihad, going behind to a Foden strike inside the opening two minutes and never restoring parity for the remainder of the game.
City recorded 71 per cent possession and racked up an xG of 2.04 to West Ham’s 0.36, taking a whopping 28 shots to the Hammers’ mere three [FotMob].
Moyes’ men mustered just 63 passes in their opponents’ half, a total dwarfed by City’s 517.

The departing Scotsman may have been hoping for more from his players in his final game – but it was not to be.
In other West Ham news, Fabricio Bruno is set to jet into Europe to sign for the Hammers around 14 June.
