West Ham United: Edson Alvarez branded ‘lucky’ after Chelsea transfer admission

Frank McAvennie has told Edson Alvarez he is lucky to have joined West Ham instead of Chelsea, with the West London club “all over the place” in recent times.

This comes after the Hammers midfielder explained he was only an hour away from joining the Blues before Ajax blocked the move and he later ended up moving to East London.

The former West Ham forward insisted that Alvarez would look at Chelsea’s current issues and be glad he never made the move, particularly given the Hammers’ success.

McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – detailed the close-knit bond between the squad at the London Stadium, comparing it to what he sees under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

It’s lucky for him because he wouldn’t get a game at Chelsea, there are that many players in that position there,” McAvennie shared.

I think he’s settled in and I think he likes it – you’re going to like it sitting in there playing alongside Kudus and Paqueta and Bowen, who wouldn’t like that?

I look at Man City and they’re always laughing because they love playing with each other, that’s what West Ham are getting to.

That’s a massive thing, I think he’s enjoying it. I think he’ll be looking at Chelsea and saying he’s won by not going there. No disrespect to Chelsea, but they’re all over the place at the moment.

Edson Alvarez has been in top form for West Ham

Alvarez has gathered high praise for his performances since arriving at the London Stadium last summer, with his impact on the success of the team becoming clear, and they miss him badly when he’s not available.

When Declan Rice left the club to join Arsenal last summer, speculation was rife about who his replacement would be and whether they would be up to the job, but Alvarez has proved so far that he has been more than capable.

The midfielder will miss the first leg of the Europa League clash with Bayer Leverkusen after accumulating too many yellow cards, with his latest picked up in the 5-0 win against Freiburg meaning he will be forced to sit out of the quarter-final.

McAvennie’s claim that he will look at Chelsea and be thankful that the move broke down is likely true. Playing a starring role for the Hammers in a higher league position and competing in Europe will be exactly what he wanted.
