West Ham United begged to ‘spend money’ this summer by pundit
Frank McAvennie has demanded that West Ham United “spend money” and invest in improving the squad this summer.
Julen Lopetegui has taken over as head coach following David Moyes’ departure at the end of the season and is expected to dramatically alter the team’s playing style.
But McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – feels there is only so much the Spaniard can do without investment in the playing staff.
“I just want to see them spend money, honestly,” McAvennie said. “They’ve got so much money in. The Rice money. They’re [only] playing £2m for the stadium – that’s all they’re paying. They’re [worried about] this [FFP], these financial restrictions. But they’re allowed to spend something. We need an investment in that team. The manager will be saying, ‘Well, hold on a minute.’ I don’t see where this manager, no matter how good he is, where he’s going to improve the team [without investment].
“So I just think, my god, you’ve got to get investment, you’ve got to get somebody through the door, you’ve got to get decent players, because there’s no point David Moyes taking us [up] – okay, the football wasn’t great – and then we’re back down again. We don’t want that. We want to be up there challenging and playing good football. Everyone else up there can play good football, so why can’t we? I’d be a bit concerned that nobody’s come in the door yet, actually.”
Will West Ham United splash out on player recruitment this summer?
The signs do suggest that the Hammers will invest in recruitment this summer, despite the lack of any done deals thus far.
The move for Fabricio Bruno publicly broke down, but a deal has been mooted for highly rated Brazilian teenager Luis Guilherme of Palmeiras.

The Hammers have endured a stuttering start to the summer transfer window, but it seems to be a matter of when, not if, the new faces start arriving.
