West Ham United ace Michail Antonio ‘looking forward’ to Liverpool clash as ‘hold his own’ claim made

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes Michail Antonio will be “looking forward” to the upcoming match between West Ham and Liverpool.

The East London outfit take on the Merseyside club in a Premier League encounter at Anfield on Sunday (24 September).

McAvennie does, however, believe that Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, if selected, will be able to keep tabs on the in-form striker.

The Dutch centre-back is available for Jurgen Klopp once again after completing his two-match ban for the red card he received against Newcastle United [official Premier League website, 19 September].

But Antonio, who has scored twice from his five league matches this season, can get at Liverpool’s other defenders, McAvennie suggested.

The Reds have been in fine form this season, winning four of their five Premier League matches so far, having drawn the other.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “That will be a big match. They are starting to score goals and starting to get things together. They haven’t got a defence though. I think Antonio might be looking forward to that one because of the form he’s in.

“If Van Dijk plays, he’s probably the only one who can keep up with him, pace-wise. For the rest of them at the back, I think Antonio in that form can hold his own against anyone.

“It is going to be interesting, but I think Liverpool are starting to play well again, and they are starting to get people back from injuries, they are on the way back. Mohamed Salah looks to be settled again.”

In other West Ham news, BBC Sport has shared a “tough-looking” Hammers prediction as a “European veterans” claim is made.
