Pundit wowed by Tomas Soucek after calls to be dropped, he ‘deserves’ start after West Ham United win v Nottingham Forest

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes Tomas Soucek deserves to start for West Ham after his display against Nottingham Forest.

The midfielder scored the winner as the Hammers defeated Forest 3-2 in the Premier League on Sunday (12 November).

Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen also found the back of the net at the London Stadium against Steve Cooper’s side.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “Soucek scoring the winner was the biggest thing I took from the game. I’ve been saying for a while that he could have been dropped, but he’s now getting into the box, and he could have had four goals against Forest.

“He’s not been doing that with any conviction, but he wanted it at the weekend. The four chances he had, he made them his and I’m thinking ‘Where have you been?’ I’ve been saying for David Moyes to drop Soucek, but not now. When he plays like that, he deserves to be in.

“I loved the interview he did when they showed him his goal. I’m thinking ‘Wow, that guy’s got passion.’ And West Ham need that.

“He’s probably thinking he needed that after not scoring for ages, so that will do him and the team the world of good.”

Soucek has featured heavily under Moyes in all competitions this season, with the midfielder boasting 17 appearances so far.

He has played 11 times in the Premier League, with four appearances in the Europa League and two in the League Cup.

And the 28-year-old has chipped in with a handful of important goals, with Soucek currently on five goals in all competitions.

In other West Ham news, Hammers scouts have watched a European trio in action, with their clubs now braced for bids.
