Pundit: West Ham United must prioritise Premier League over Europa Conference League

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie believes West Ham must prioritise the Premier League over the Europa Conference League, despite being on the verge of the quarter finals.

The Hammers won the first leg of their last 16 clash with AEK Larneca 2-0 last week thanks to two Michail Antonio goals, and the second leg tonight is their last game of the month due to the FA Cup and international break.

And while McAvennie admits the fans would love another run in Europe, he feels the team must concentrate on the league before anything and wants Moyes to go with two up top to get more goals in the side.

“They’d love the run in Europe,” he told West Ham Zone.

“Last 16 against Larneca is a draw that you couldn’t have wished for because they should win that home and away. That gets you into the last eight and then anything can happen.

“But you’ve got to concentrate on the league. You’ve got to do it. I don’t get it. Play the same team if you have to. Don’t keep chopping and changing it.

“There’s no replacements for anyone. David hasn’t got the money, I don’t know the situation, but he needs to strengthen. He can’t have boys coming in for the future.

“We need ready-made players, not ones for the future. We need to score goals.

“This playing one up front thing.. play both Scamacca and Antonio. They’ll work together and play off each other. They’ll want it to work.

“For me Antonio can shift right across the front line anyway. For me it would work with the two of them.

“I’d rather go down having a fight than with a whimper.”
