By West Ham Zone speaking to Frank McAvennie

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

West Ham should avoid hiring Rafa Benitez and instead do everything to bring in Jose Mourinho if they opt to sack David Moyes, says Frank McAvennie.

Moyes has found himself under pressure after recent results found the Hammers in a relegation battle, but he alleviated some of that pressure with a 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest recently.

That was seen as a make or break game for Moyes, with reports that Rafa Benitez was ready to step in and take over if they’d lost, but McAvennie would rather the club went for a “born winner” like Mourinho over Benitez.

“I don’t want anyone to go but I’d like Mourinho to come in,” he told West Ham Zone. “He’s wanting to come back to England apparently, and he’s just a born winner.

“People will say that he doesn’t play the right way, but West Ham haven’t played the right way for years. So they can’t say that.

“Roma hadn’t won anything in Europe before, and then they won the Conference League last year. Born winner. Everywhere he goes.

“There’s a lot about him and I like a manager who has a go at you, and then it’s forgotten about. I like that. He’s a man’s man. He’ll have a go at players and then it’s forgotten about. There’s no lingering, I like that.

“Someone who faces you up and tells you what you’re doing wrong, tells you to improve or you’re out of the team. You can’t get any fairer than that.

“I think if he walked into West Ham it would change the character of the club. But David is still there.

“I’d much rather Mourinho than Benitez. He’s went all over the place and he’s not done anything. I think Tottenham is the only place Mourinho’s not won anything, and he got to a cup final but got sacked the week before it.
