Pundit warns David Moyes to ‘sort it out’ at West Ham United as Lucas Paqueta position change eyed

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

David Moyes must consider changing Lucas Paqueta’s position at West Ham in the second half of the season as he was warned to “sort it out” after their poor start.

The Hammers have lost nine of 15 Premier League games this season and sit just one point above the relegation zone despite spending upwards of £150m during the summer to sign players like Brazil international Paqueta.

But after watching him shine at the World Cup in a deeper role, Frank McAvennie was adamant about how Moyes should deploy his record signing but suggested there was more wrong with the team than just where Paqueta is playing.

“He’ll have to [consider it], but he had a great understanding with Scamacca didn’t he?” he told West Ham Zone.

“He was coming late and I think he’s a good player. Him and Rice. I don’t know what’s wrong with West Ham at the moment, I’m going to be honest with you.

“When you’ve got players like him, Scamacca who is a starter for Italy, Rice whose a starter for England, Benrahma, Fornals. West Ham shouldn’t be where they are, so there is something not right. So they’ve got to sort it out.

“It’s a club I love very much and I’m looking at players and I’m thinking, ‘yous are better than that.’

“I think this World Cup may have come at an ideal time for David. He’d have taken a wee break, spent some time with his family and he’ll have a think about it, maybe realise that he’s brought too many players in and tried to change it too much.

“For me he’s got to get a team in, his first-team, and play them as much as you can to get results and push up the table. Because he can’t keep chopping and changing. It’s not doing anyone any good.

“I look at the players they’ve got and Paqueta has been brilliant for Brazil, Rice is a stalwart for England, Scamacca is a striker for Italy. You’ve got Bowen who was nearly in the England squad, Benrahma what a talent he is, lets not count out anyone else.

“Maybe this wee break has come at a good time for West Ham.”

West Ham return to Premier League action against league leaders Arsenal on Boxing Day.
