Pundit wants West Ham United ace's 'reprimanded' after 'disrespectful' Carabao Cup exit

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie was absolutely fuming that West Ham were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Blackburn in midweek, calling it “disrespectful”.

The Hammers were eliminated on penalties by Championship club Blackburn on Wednesday after a poor performance saw them draw 2-2 in regular time, with David Moyes making several changes to his usual starting lineup.

But McAvennie feels that decision was “disrespectful” to the competition and feels that the club’s best chance of silverware is now gone after a “ridiculous” display.

“It’s ridiculous that we’re out so early,” he told West Ham Zone.

“I would have liked to have seen [us go further]. They just didn’t want it.

“The fans turned out. I just look at West Ham and I think, you’re not going to win anything. The best thing they’ve got is the League Cup.

“The Europa League last year they could’ve won it. They should’ve won it, but shoulda, woulda, coulda.

“It’s just the fact that in the English league some teams are disrespecting it, and they’re putting out kids. I would’ve thought, if I were a manager, lets go and do this for the fans.

“Lets get us to Wembley. Then we’ll take our chance against the Man City’s and all of that, because the people they put on [are that good].

“I would think West Ham, for me, honestly I’m disappointed in them because that was their best chance of winning anything. And they didn’t do it.

“I feel for Declan Rice because he’s a great lad and he’d love to pick up a trophy for West Ham before he goes, before he moves. And I’d love to have seen that.

Everyone keeps going on about how long it’s been since they’ve won a trophy. They don’t mention the trophy. It doesn’t matter to them. They just want to win a trophy and that’s that. The fans love that.

“People are disrespecting the League Cup because for me, I’d want to win it. If West Ham gave 100% they’d have beaten Blackburn. My God they’d have beaten Blackburn.

“David will say that he put a team out to beat Blackburn and he did. But they didn’t do it. So someone has got to be reprimanded for it. It means they’re not good enough.”
