Pundit shares West Ham United verdict after 3-1 win v Chelsea, James Ward-Prowse ‘looked at home’

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has given his verdict on West Ham’s Premier League victory against Chelsea on Sunday (20 August).

Having drawn 1-1 at Bournemouth on the opening day of the season, the Hammers maintained their unbeaten start with a 3-1 win against the Blues.

McAvennie admitted that James Ward-Prowse looked immediately at home, but singled out Said Benrahma as one player who could have done much more.

Summer signings Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez made their debuts for the club, with the former assisting two of the goals at the London Stadium in a dream start to life in East London.

The former Hammers striker believes it was a good time to play Chelsea, with the West London club currently undergoing a major squad revamp.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I felt good because Ward-Prowse was in there. He’s going to be a good player for us. He looked at home.

“They did alright in general. I’ll be honest, Paqueta was brilliant again, Said Benrahma could have done a bit more I think.

“Chelsea were looking good. I know they got beat 3-1, but they looked a decent team, and if Mauricio Pochettino can sort them out, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

“So I’m glad we got them at the time we did, I’m delighted with that. The atmosphere at the weekend was brilliant too. It was a gritty performance, they dug in for long periods of time, especially when we got a man sent off.”
