Pundit raves about West Ham as Dharmesh Sheth moots major £25m loan-to-buy transfer

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie is thrilled by the possibility of West Ham signing Gabriel Barbosa on a loan-to-buy basis from Flamengo this month.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on Tuesday [4 January, 05:16pm], Dharmesh Sheth shared that Gabigol, 25, had informed Flamengo officials that he’d like to enter discussions about a move to the Premier League if a decent bid was made for him in January.

Sheth added that if the Irons were to sign the Brazil international, the deal could be “an 18-month loan with an option to buy for around €30million (£25million)”.

McAvennie is a massive of fan of loan-to-buy deals, suggesting that it offers both the clubs and the players a chance to know if a permanent move is the best thing for them.

He also likes the fact that West Ham are trying to sign strikers from Brazil.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, he said: “The best thing about signing players like that is that you get to try them out.

Some players will hit the ground running over here and love it but some of them may not adjust.

If they get the boy in on loan from now until the end of the season, it’ll give him a chance to see if he likes it and it’ll give the club a chance to see if they like him.

It’s a win-win if you get somebody like Barbosa in, especially from that part of the world.

“It’s a good idea and I know a lot of managers used to do that because, at the end of the day, it’s good for the players and the club.

If they can get that done, there’s not a problem with that. That’s a win-win.”

Gabigol has scored 84 goals in 124 appearances since joining Flamengo in 2019 in what was initially a loan deal before a move was made permanent.

He joined the Rio De Janeiro club after a miserable spell in Europe yielded just two goals and 15 appearances across stints at Inter Milan and Benfica.

In other West Ham news, an “extraordinary” offer could see the Irons bag this centre-back in January.
