Pundit moots ‘on fire’ Michail Antonio to love West Ham United clash v Manchester City

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes West Ham United striker Michail Antonio will love playing against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

The pundit has suggested that the Hammers attacker will enjoy testing himself against the Premier League champions.

The defending champions and current league leaders travel to the London Stadium for a league meeting with West Ham on Saturday (17 September).

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “Antonio is on fire at the moment, so he is going to be loving it against Manchester City. He will want to test himself.

“The only problem is keeping him free from injury, because Ings is not the kind of player who can lead the line like that. He’s a good striker, but he can’t lead the line and hold the ball up like Antonio can.”

Guardiola’s men make the trip to East London in formidable form, winning all four of their league matches so far. The Manchester outfit have scored 11 times, conceding just twice, with their star striker Erling Haaland leading the goalscoring charts with six goals.

The home side are, however, also unbeaten, winning three and drawing one of their four matches so far. Winger Jarrod Bowen leads the club’s scoring list with three goals, closely followed by Antonio, who has netted twice.

A win for the men in claret and blue could see them soar to the top of the table, although they are currently joined on 10 points by Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal.

In other West Ham news, a journalist believes the club are “stronger” without Declan Rice as “positive” early signs emerge.
