Pundit: David Moyes must axe Lukasz Fabianski and start Alphonse Areola for West Ham United despite win v Fulham

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie believes West Ham should consider dropping Lukasz Fabianski in goal after the 5-1 loss to Newcastle, despite the clean sheet afterwards.

The Hammers were thumped 5-1 last week but bounced back with a huge 1-0 win over Fulham to escape the relegation zone and move on to 30pts for the season.

But despite keeping a clean sheet in the following game, McAvennie feels that results like the one against Newcastle are the type to get a manager sacked and because he was at fault for two of the goals Moyes should consider making a change.

West Ham

“Hopefully it was just a one-off,” he told West Ham Zone.

“He made a couple of good saves [v Newcastle] but he gave them two goals. You can lose 2-1 or 3-1, it’s a lot better than 5-1. Results like that get managers sacked.

“If they’re not going to sack him [Moyes] then he’s got to do something about it. Make a change.

“You can’t keep backing the players when it’s you sending them out. The next few weeks are huge.”

West Ham

Moyes signed Alphonse Areola on a permanent deal last summer from Paris Saint-Germain after a successful loan in the previous campaign, but he has so far been behind the ageing Pole in the pecking order.

His only Premier League appearances for West Ham have come when Fabianski has been unavailable, and the Fabianski kept his place against Fulham suggests that won’t be changing any time soon.
