Pundit calls for West Ham United to move for 'ideal' striker Ivan Toney

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

West Ham should look at signing Brentford striker Ivan Toney this summer, with Frank McAvennie labelling him “ideal” for the club.

The Hammers have completed a £35.5m deal for Italy international Gianluca Scamacca already this summer for him to compete with Michail Antonio for a starting spot.

But while Moyes looks to bolster the squad this summer, the former striker believes that while he’d likely be expensive that Toney would be a great addition to the Irons squad.

“He’s the kind of player that could go to West Ham,” he told West Ham Zone.

“He wouldn’t have to move his house, he could just go there.

Would he go to Newcastle? I think yeah. I think it’s a big year for Newcastle because I think they’re going to win it? Not a chance. But they’ll want to challenge the top 8, top 7 and get in the Conference League. That’s what their aim will be this year. The year after it’ll be the Champions League spots they’ll want to get. Then they’ll be challenging for the league.

“Toney is not one of them top strikers in the world. I think they’ve got the money to spend big on a striker and I don’t know how much Toney would cost, but it’ll be a lot of money won’t it? It’ll be a lot of money.

“I don’t know if Brentford would let him go, but if they did then I think he’d be ideal for West Ham. Because he could play beside him or in place of Antonio. So yeah, I like Toney. I like him as a player.”

Toney has attracted interest this summer after 12 goals and five assists in 33 games during his maiden Premier League campaign, but Brentford have put a £40m price tag on his head to ward off any potential suitors.
