Pundit blasts ‘absolutely ridiculous’ England snub of West Ham United ‘revelation’ James Ward-Prowse

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes it is “absolutely ridiculous” that West Ham ace James Ward-Prowse has not been selected by England.

The Hammers midfielder missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s latest Three Lions squad for the current international break.

The boss instead opted for Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips, Conor Gallagher and Jordan Henderson in that area, as per BBC Sport (5 October).

But McAvennie believes Ward-Prowse should have been called up ahead of Henderson and Phillips due to their lack of game time.

The pundit has also questioned Southgate’s continued selection of Manchester United central defender Harry Maguire.

England host Australia in a friendly on Friday (13 October) before another home clash against Italy in Euro 2024 qualifying on Tuesday (17 October).

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I don’t know why he didn’t pick Ward-Prowse. He’s got Phillips and Henderson in the team, it’s absolutely ridiculous. Don’t get me wrong, two good players, but they shouldn’t be there. They’re not playing.

“It’s a disgrace for players that are playing week in, week out and doing very, very well. Even at centre-back with Maguire in. I know Southgate has his favourites, but that’s ridiculous.

“Ward-Prowse has been a revelation since he’s come to West Ham. To not even be in the squad is an absolute disgrace. Henderson is playing in front of 900 people. He’s not anywhere near the level of international football. How do you think he can then come in and compete at that level? I just don’t get it.

“It’s a friendly first up, these are the games where you’ve got to try players, but Southgate isn’t doing it. I feel sorry for Ward-Prowse.”
