McAvennie: Lewis Ferguson can replace Declan Rice at West Ham

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Wantaway Aberdeen midfielder Lewis Ferguson is an “ideal replacement” for Declan Rice at West Ham, according to Frank McAvennie.

Ferguson, 21, has handed in a transfer request at Aberdeen amid speculation linking him with a move to Watford.

According to The Scottish Sun, Watford’s £2million bid for the Scotland Under-21 midfielder has been rejected by Aberdeen and that is seemingly what led to him trying to force his way out of Pittodrie.

Ferguson is the son of ex-Rangers star Derek Ferguson, who former Hammers striker McAvennie knows.

He feels that at some point in the future, Ferguson could replace Rice once the England international’s days in East London are over.

“I know him and his dad. Lewis has a great head on his shoulders,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

“I said [Ferguson] would be the ideal replacement for Rice at West Ham. He’s similar, he can control the midfield the same way.

“Do I want him to go to West Ham? Not at the moment. Declan has that place. Maybe in a year or so, I wouldn’t mind him coming into West Ham because he’s a really decent player.”

West Ham

Ferguson is only 21-years-old but he’s played over 100 times in the Scottish Premiership for both Aberdeen and former club Hamilton.

He comes from a family of winners too, as the son of Derek and the nephew of Rangers legend Barry Ferguson.

We don’t think a Rice replacement is needed for a long time but we do need a back-up for him, as was seen while he was out injured recently.

Could Aberdeen’s Ferguson be the answer?

In other West Ham news, this “frustrated” fan favourite has dropped a hint about his future amid talk of him moving on.
