Lucas Paqueta lucky in Bournemouth draw as West Ham United offence not spotted

Lucas Paqueta should have been made to retake his penalty that opened the scoring for West Ham United against Bournemouth, according to Keith Hackett.

The Brazil international put West Ham in front in the 87th minute of Monday’s (16 December) contest and celebrated it in an “interesting” manner.

While much of the focus was on whether the spot-kick should have been awarded in the first place, former PGMOL chief Hackett spotted an offence regarding the penalty itself.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, Hackett said: “With the penalty kick, Paqueta halts his run for a fraction of a second, continues his run and then scores.

“By stopping his run, he has offended. Therefore, by the letter of the law, the kick should have been retaken the second the ball hit the back of the net.”

West Ham earn valuable point against Bournemouth

Having worked so hard to take the lead at the Vitality Stadium, West Ham conceded just a few minutes later through an admittedly sublime Enes Unal free-kick.

Still, a point away to a Bournemouth side flying high in the Premier League is surely one Julen Lopetegui would have taken before a ball was kicked.

Combined with the win at Wolves last week, the Spaniard finally has a platform to build from heading into the festive fixtures.

As for the Paqueta penalty, while the letter of the law suggests he should have retaken it, the outcome would have been the same anyway.
