Keith Hackett: I would have advised David Moyes to appeal West Ham red v Lyon for Aaron Cresswell

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium...

Keith Hackett has insisted that he would have advised West Ham United and David Moyes to appeal the red card handed to Aaron Cresswell.

The ex-FIFA official admitted that it was an injustice that the defender was sent off, and will now miss the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final.

The Irons travel to France to take on Lyon again and could be without Cresswell as well as the injured Kurt Zouma.

“He should be,” he exclusively told West Ham Zone.

“I wonder whether West Ham appealed, invariably, the difficulty there is they usually stick to supporting the referees in Europe.

“I would have been advising David Moyes to have appealed that decision, absolutely. It was an injustice.”

West Ham

Injustice.

How on earth this was given as a red, we still don’t know.

It hasn’t yet been made public whether or not an appeal was made by the Irons, but it looks as though it would have been turned away.

Hackett admitted that European officials usually stick with the referees’ decision, despite whatever evidence is on show.

Cresswell did bring down Moussa Dembele, but it was never a clear goalscoring opportunity given he was running away from goal.

Either way, we can’t make excuses and still have a job to do.
