Keith Hackett believes that the referee made the right decision in the West Ham v Brighton game in the WSL

We’re delighted to welcome former Premier League referee Keith Hackett as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium.

Former Premier League referee Keith Hackett believes that the referee was right to send Hawa Cissoko off against Brighton & Hove Albion in the Women’s Super League.

The Hammers were drawing 0-0 until Cissoko blocked what looked to be a goal-bound effort from a Brighton player with her arm, and the referee deemed it worthy of a red card.

However, the Hammers’ boss Olli Harder didn’t agree and believes that Cissoko should have remained on the field despite handling the ball [West Ham official website].

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, Hackett said, “I think the referee’s made the judgement that it is handball, there’s no question.

“That handball has prevented the ball going into the back of the net.

“He [Harder] might not see it as deliberate, but the referee does. I think the referee’s made the right call.”

Cissoko was right to be sent off.

If Hackett thinks that Cissoko should have been sent off for handball, then who are we to argue.

In real-time, it did look like the strike from the Brighton player was rocketing into the back of the net even with another Irons player on the line [The Women’s Football Show 05/09/2021].

Therefore, she stopped a goal, and the red card was the right decision.

Of course, that changed the game, and the Hammers were 2-0 down before half-time, despite starting the game well.

However, Cissoko should have known better, and the referee did brilliantly to spot the handball and make the right decision by sending her off.

This might not be what Irons fans want to hear, but we agree with Hackett that the referee made the right call.

It is now up to Harder to get his side up for the game against Aston Villa and forget about this defeat.
