Jhon Duran has point to prove as West Ham United eye transfer for Aston Villa ace

Jhon Duran will have “something to prove” if West Ham can strike a deal with Aston Villa this summer, Frank McAvennie has said.

The Hammers are close to sealing a £37million deal for the 21-year-old, according to AreaNapoli [18 July], after Julen Lopetegui identified him as his top target for the striker position.

The Colombian forward has mainly played a backup role to Ollie Watkins since arriving from Chicago Fire in January 2023, making just three Premier League starts last term.

But McAvennie is excited by the prospect of Duran arriving at the London Stadium itching to show what he can do.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “He’s a good striker. It’s not a bad thing that he’s not getting a game for Aston Villa. Ollie Watkins got his England cap because of what he’s done this season.

It won’t be a hindrance to him. I would take him and have a go. I think he’s got something to prove. I like those players, the ones that can’t get into the starting XI. If he comes to West Ham, he’ll have something to prove and he’ll do it.”

West Ham United to seal Jhon Duran transfer?

Duran has shown in bursts exactly what he is capable of on the football pitch, with his development being somewhat hampered at Villa Park. Most of his appearances have been short cameos from the bench.

Despite this, there has not been a lack of interest in the striker this summer, with Chelsea also said to be keeping an eye on proceedings earlier in the window [talkSPORT].

West Ham United have reportedly submitted several bids for Aston Villa ace Jhon Duran

With just eight goals in 49 appearances since arriving in the Midlands, Duran certainly has a lot of convincing to do at the London Stadium and in the Premier League.

However, Julen Lopetegui only has the injury-hit Michail Antonio and out-of-form Danny Ings to choose from currently, so the manager cannot be too picky when it comes to transfer targets.
