Frank McAvennie: West Ham owners would be stupid to say no if invited to European Super League

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

It would be the final nail in the coffin for GSB if West Ham ever accepted entry to the European Super League, according to Frank McAvennie.

David Gold, David Sullivan and Karren Brady are already widely despised by West Ham supporters and if they were to ever join the ESL, that would no doubt take the relationship beyond all repair.

As it stands, the Hammers are above all but two of the Premier League’s six ESL clubs and on course to finish in a European qualification spot.

David Moyes’ performance as manager has glossed over the mismanagement at boardroom level but McAvennie feels as though GSB would still be partial to accepting an invite to the ESL if they were handed one.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, the ex-striker said: “The owners would be stupid not to [say yes] because of the money that’s involved.

“I’m hoping it doesn’t happen because it’s definitely not for the fans.

“The owners [of the ESL clubs] are letting the fans down and I think it would be the final nail in the coffin for the owners of West Ham if they join. But they’re not invited so it doesn’t matter.”

The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas has joked that West Ham’s invite to the ESL was lost in the post with the Hammers still being one of the most widely-followed clubs in England which has a history of winning European silverware and is performing superbly this season in the Premier League.

We wouldn’t put it past GSB to say ‘yes’ to ESL if they were ever invited one day but as long as they’re in control, the club is unlikely to ever reach the point where the Hammers would be considered among the elite in England, let alone Europe.

In other West Ham news, the Irons are interested in this “sensational” goalkeeper playing at a Premier League club.
