Frank McAvennie wants West Ham to sign Ross Barkley and Jesse Lingard
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie has urged West Ham to sign Ross Barkley and Jesse Lingard this summer in an England international double swoop.
Lingard spent the second half of the 2020/21 campaign in east London, arriving on loan from Manchester United and hitting the ground running, scoring nine Premier League goals in 16 appearances.
Meanwhile, Chelsea midfielder Barkley spent the entire season on loan at Aston Villa but started less than half (18) of their league games, scoring just three times.
Both players are seasoned England internationals, with Lingard just missing out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad, and Barkley picking up 33 caps, though he has not featured since 2019 after struggling with fitness and form.
However, ex-Irons striker McAvennie wants David Moyes to reunite with his former Everton protege, who the Daily Mail claim is being lined up for a temporary move to the London Stadium.
“I’d like to see him sign with Lingard,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.
“I think West Ham have got to put themselves in that position now, they’re fighting for Europe. This is when you kick on. You don’t want to sign one player and say this is the cheaper option, that’s not what you want to do.
“You want to bring in Barkley as well, he’s a good player. David Moyes knows him.
“I just hope we get Lingard, I really do.
“I don’t want to hear he could come in as a cheaper option for Lingard, I’d rather West Ham buy the two of them.”
Just Lingard, please
Barkley was a budding talent under Moyes at Everton, and he was expected to go on to great things.
That’s never materialised, however, and his career has now stagnated.
Maybe there are some parallels with Lingard, but that doesn’t mean this is a move that would be a success.
Furthermore, signing him and Lingard would leave us extremely bloated in the attacking midfield areas, with Pablo Fornals, Said Benrahma, Manuel Lanzini and Jarrod Bowen all vying for a place in the starting XI.
Even if Lingard doesn’t sign permanently, we’d like to see Moyes go for a younger, hungrier option than Barkley.
