We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie wants to see West Ham sign more players with the attitude of Jesse Lingard when the transfer window reopens in the summer.
Lingard, 28, arrived on loan from Manchester United in January after failing to make a Premier League appearance for the Old Trafford club all season.
The attacker was regularly criticised for his performances for Man United so he joined the Irons in January with a massive point to prove.
And no matter how well Lingard plays between now and the end of the season, there’s no doubt a point has been proved with the Hammers loanee scoring six goals and supplying four assists in eight appearances for the East London club.
Lingard has also played his way back into the England team by showcasing his superb attitude and talent while on loan at West Ham.
Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey has been linked with a return to London in the summer with West Ham reportedly interested in the former Arsenal star [Calcio Mercato].
McAvennie wouldn’t mind seeing the club sign players of Ramsey’s stature – as long as they show the same application as Lingard has done and not see West Ham as one final payday before they retire.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “As long as he’s not coming back [to England] to retire and earn some money,”
“We need more players like Lingard who are going to push and do well for the team. Unfortunately, we’ve only got Lingard on loan but he’s been great to watch.”
Ramsey is reportedly earning £400,000-a-week on his contract at Juventus [BBC Sport] and there’s absolutely no way he’ll be offered anywhere near that if West Ham sign him in the summer.
Italian news website Calcio Mercato reports that Juve want to get rid of the Welsh international to cut down on their wage budget but if you were Ramsey, would you be willing to quit life in Turin to return to London and not earn as much?
It seems unlikely but at least if Ramsey did join the Hammers, we’d be safe to assume he isn’t doing it for the money.
