Frank McAvennie: Tammy Abraham ‘would be a great signing’ for West Ham

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham “would be a great signing” for West Ham as he’s pals with Declan Rice, according to former player Frank McAvennie.

According to reliable insider ExWHUemployee on the West Ham Way podcast, 23-year-old Abraham has been made the Hammers’ top target ahead of the summer transfer window.

David Moyes is short of striker options in his squad after Sebastien Haller was sold to Ajax in January and Michail Antonio was left as the only senior centre-forward.

West Ham

Abraham has struggled for consistent game-time at Chelsea this season with the ex-Aston Villa loanee starting just 12 times in the Premier League.

He has, however, scored 12 goals in 30 appearances across all competitions and has shown his worth in the Premier League with 26 goals in 87 top-flight outings in his career.

McAvennie wants to see Abraham head to East London ahead of next season, especially as he can offer something different to Antonio.

“I think he would be a great signing. He’s pals with Rice so that would be good,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.

“I keep thinking they need someone who’s different to Antonio. Antonio’s a big powerhouse but I think they need someone different and Abraham will score goals – that’s for sure.

“He’s a London boy so I would think he would want to stay in London and if they can get him at West Ham, he’s a striker I would take.”

West Ham

West Ham haven’t found it tough to get goal this season despite their lack of striker options in Moyes’ squad.

Only five teams have scored more times than the Hammers this season in the Premier League with Jesse Lingard, Tomas Soucek, Jarrod Bowen, Pablo Fornals and Craig Dawson getting among the goals as well as striker Antonio.

It’s a good job too as Antonio is currently injured yet again, leaving Moyes without a natural and fit striker in his senior squad.

Abraham has had some injury issues in his career but nothing on the level as what Antonio has had to endure.

Let’s hope that if the Irons do go ahead and sign Rice’s mate from Chelsea, he’s able to stay fit and really make a name for himself in the East End.

In other West Ham news, Bowen hit back with an impressive display in the win against Leicester.
