Frank McAvennie slams attitude of West Ham winger Felipe Anderson

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has taken aim at Felipe Anderson with the West Ham winger reportedly on the verge of an Irons exit this summer.

The Brazilian was a big-hit at the London Stadium when he arrived from Lazio in 2018, scoring nine Premier League goals in his debut season.

However, he scored just once the following season and was loaned out to Porto for the majority of the 2020/21 campaign.

Ex-Irons striker McAvennie has suggested that the 28-year-old is a player that downs tools easily.

McAvennie told West Ham Zone: “I can’t understand why he was such a big hit in Italy, they love to tackle but I’ve never seen him go into one, let alone win one.

“He’s a wonderful talent but sometimes you’ve got to go and win the ball. He gives up.

“He’s been a waste of time and energy because he’s a talent who’s not showing it.

“There’s something not right with him.”

When he’s on song Anderson is one of the most eye-catching stars around. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been very often at all, especially since his first season at West Ham.

He can probably be described as a luxury player, someone who plays a prominent role when the team is doing well but goes missing when the going gets tough.

That’s never going to wash under David Moyes, which is why his exit has been inevitable for some time.
