Frank McAvennie predicts West Ham clash v Crystal Palace
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie predicts West Ham to continue their 100% start to the season with a win over Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.
Patrick Vieira’s side make the short trip to the London Stadium looking for their first win under the legendary Arsenal midfielder who was appointed as Roy Hodgson’s successor earlier in the summer.
They lost 3-0 to Chelsea on the first game of the season before being held to a 0-0 draw by Brentford last weekend.
West Ham, meanwhile, sit top of the table after scoring eight goals in two games.
Ex-Irons forward McAvennie backs his old team to keep up their flying start.
“They’re on a high, I think West Ham will win that,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.
“There’s no point in scoring four against Newcastle and Leicester and then dropping points against Crystal Palace, these are the teams that you need to beat. Anything else is a bonus.
“If they have any aspirations about staying in Europe then this is a game they have to win. These are the sorts of games they have let themselves down in the past, but I just don’t see that happening with David Moyes in charge.”
The Irons beat Palace 3-2 in a thrilling game at Selhurst Park in January, but their recent record against the Eagles has been patchy to say the least.
Before that victory, we had not won since 2018, with Palace winning twice and claiming two draws in that period.
There are usually goals in these encounters – both teams have scored in each of the last eight games.
