Frank McAvennie praises Pablo Fornals after West Ham star's Spain call-up
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie has admitted he was surprised that West Ham star Pablo Fornals received an international call-up by Spain on Monday.
The Spanish national team announced on Monday [07/06/21], via their official website, that the 25-year-old Irons midfielder would begin training with them on Tuesday after their camp went into isolation following their captain, Sergio Busquets, testing positive for COVID-19.
Fornals has not played for the senior side since 2018, but he could now be set to play in the upcoming European Championships after being named on the standby list.
Ex-Irons striker McAvennie admits he has been forced to reconsider his thoughts on Fornals this season.
He told West Ham Zone: “I didn’t expect it, the kid has surprised me on a couple of occasions this year, I thought he was being dropped out by [Jesse] Lingard.
“But he stepped up to the mark and it looks like he is enjoying his football.
“I keep saying it, when you’re enjoying your football you get your rewards, and this is his reward, so I’m delighted for him.”
Time to shine?
It’s an unfortunate set of circumstances that may lead to Fornals playing at Euro 2020, but sometimes you have to just take your chance, however it comes about.
That’s the world of football, and Fornals may just be the latest lucky beneficiary of it.
He certainly deserves his spot in the limelight after being a relatively unheralded star for the Irons this season.
Appearing at a major international tournament can only be good for morale, and this could act as another springboard to take his career to new heights.
Of course, his involvement is not yet guaranteed, but we’re sure he would not let anyone down were he to get the nod.
That would add him to a number of West Ham stars that are set to compete in Euro 2020, with Declan Rice and Lukasz Fabianski another couple of first-team mainstays that are set to feature.
