Frank McAvennie expects West Ham to replace ‘battered’ Kurt Zouma
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
West Ham United defender Kurt Zouma is unlikely to play again this season but Frank McAvennie thinks the Irons already have enough to cover him.
The 27-year-old rolled his ankle against Brentford on Sunday and had to be subbed off after just half an hour to be replaced by Issa Diop, who slotted alongside Craig Dawson for the 2-0 defeat.
The club released a statement earlier this week saying that the Frenchman wouldn’t travel to his homeland for the Europa League quarter-final against Lyon to have scans and tests on his injury.

His participation in Burnley’s visit to the London Stadium on Sunday is unknown as of yet but it would seem unlikely he would be asked to start so soon after his injury.
McAvennie, a former Hammers striker, believes that David Moyes has more than enough cover for Zouma and backs Dawson and Diop to be solid enough against the relegation battlers.
“I think he’s a damn good player, I really do,” McAvennie said to West Ham Zone. “His head has been battered from pillar to post this season.
“But I think Dawson and Diop will be alright. Even the young players know what they are doing when they come in.

“They work all week with the first team so they know exactly what to do.”
Dawson and Diop were able to keep Lyon from scoring last night so the much less potent attack of Burnley should be no problem to them in theory but they have to keep their levels up to prevent any embarrassment domestically.
In other West Ham news, a journalist shared footage of what Lyon fans did after they were beaten 3-0 by the Irons yesterday.
