Frank McAvennie blasts ex-West Ham United striker Sebastien Haller, labels him ‘lazy sod’

Frank McAvennie has labelled former West Ham striker Sebastien Haller a ‘lazy sod’ and is stunned by recent links to see him replace Erling Haaland at Dortmund.

Haller joined West Ham in a club record £45m deal back in 2019 but spent just 18 months in London before departing for Ajax, where has been a sensation – scoring 47 times in 65 games for the Dutch club.

That form has seen him linked with a move to replace Manchester City bound Haaland at Borussia Dortmund, but McAvennie is stunned by that news and says the two players are ‘not in the same orbit’.

“It’s a crazy situation,” he told West Ham Zone. “I just think the Germans play a certain way and it’s suits Haller.

For me, he was nothing. He did nothing. He didn’t run, he must be doing other things over there. Or they’re playing him in a three, which doesn’t happen here.

“When he came over here we asked him to play on his own and it just didn’t work. He couldn’t hold it, he’s a big lump of wood. But I’ll tell you what, he gets in the box and can score goals which is great.

“We saw him when he scored goals here though, he wasn’t even celebrating. So he didn’t want to be there, which didn’t help. But sometimes when you don’t want to be there, you don’t run around as much and I thought he was just a lazy sod.

“So I couldn’t see any stretch of the imagination that Haller would be in the same stratosphere as Haaland. You just wouldn’t. They’re not in the same orbit.”

Haller was one of those deals that looked good at the time, but ultimately it didn’t work and him leaving was best for all parties.

He’s now at a club that play the perfect football to suit his style of play and if we’re being honest, is a lower level of competition than the Premier League.

He isn’t missed at the London Stadium by anyone and nor will he be any time soon.
