Frank McAvennie believes Declan Rice could sign new West Ham United contract

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium… (edited)

Frank McAvennie believes Declan Rice could stay at West Ham after being offered a new eight-year contract, but says the money won’t be the reason.

The terms of the renewal offer on the table were shared last week by Jim White, with the Hammers offering Rice an eight-year deal worth £200k per week but it was also stated that he currently has no intention of putting pen to paper.

And McAvennie isn’t shocked by that, because he believes the player wants to be sure the club is going to kick on before signing on rather than just taking the money currently on offer.

“Well I wouldn’t think so [he’d sign for that length of time], but listen that’s him sorted for the rest of his life,” he told West Ham Zone.

“I don’t know if you’re allowed to sign that length of contract. That means he’s settled if he got injured, he’s a family man ain’t he? I think it’s going to be down to football.

“They can offer Declan whatever they want, I think if he gets shown that they’re buying players of the calibre that he wants at the club he’ll stay. I don’t see why not.

“I think he likes it, he likes the club and he likes the manager. I don’t see why he wouldn’t sign that contract, as long as they’re bringing in players of the calibre that he wants.

“He wants the club to kick on. How many times has it happened at West Ham, where they’ve done brilliant and then not kicked on from that? And gone backwards.

“I think that’ll be in his mind rather than the contract. I think he’s a wealthy boy anyway and he’s going to get that kind of money anyway.”

Rice’s deal is not a priority for the summer and rightly so. There’s no need for him to sign an eight-year deal at this stage when he currently has three years left and the club is in a period of proving that they’re going to kick on.
