Frank McAvennie baffled by West Ham decisions – ‘I don’t get it’

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

West Ham have suffered something of a dip in form in the last few games and some people have pointed towards the lack of depth in search of a reason.

Particularly in attack, David Moyes has just Michail Antonio to call upon in the senior setup and that is wearing him out at an alarming rate, as The Athletic explored.

The failure to sign any forward in January wasn’t what the Hammers will have been hoping for given their hopes for success both domestically and in Europe.

Former Irons striker Frank McAvennie is baffled at the decision not to bring in another attacker or strengthen the depth over the entire pitch in the January transfer window.

“I think the biggest problem for West Ham going for fourth place is their squad is thin,” McAvennie exclusively told West Ham Zone.

“They’ve not got like-for-like players coming in and that’s a concern. I get David saying why they didn’t sign players because they weren’t going to improve his squad but there are players out there if you want them, go and them get them.”

“I don’t get it. I feel for the fans because they must love getting into the Europa League and challenging for the Champions League. West Ham must see that and think, ‘this is what we promised them’.

“I don’t get why they didn’t sign anyone in January, I just do not get that. Injuries haven’t been kind to West Ham.”

The Europa League knockouts begin for the Hammers very soon and that might be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for Antonio and he isn’t the only one playing far too many minutes in the famous claret and blue.

In other West Ham news, they have received an injury boost ahead of Sunday’s game against Wolves with this player set to return to the squad.
