Frank McAvennie backs West Ham to sign new goalkeeper
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie claims David Moyes will want to sign a new goalkeeper for West Ham in the summer transfer window.
Lukasz Fabianski will enter the final year of his contract in the summer while Darren Randolph has struggled when called upon to step into the first team and David Martin’s deal expires this year.
West Brom number one Sam Johnstone has been linked with the Irons, with the Express & Star newspaper reporting the 28-year-old has been lined up as a possible replacement for 36-year-old Fabianski.
The Sun has reported Tottenham are also tracking Johnstone but McAvennie has pointed out he might not get as much game-time in North London as he would in the East End.
Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “If he goes to Tottenham it will be for a number two.
“I think David will get a new goalkeeper at West Ham. I don’t know much about ‘keepers but if David wants him…”
Johnstone has been superb for West Brom this season despite their woeful defensive record
Gary Lineker was blown away by the Englishman’s “unbelievable” save to help West Brom earn a point against Manchester United earlier this season.
That was just one of many good saves by Johnstone, who’s made more saves than any goalkeeper in Europe’s top-five leagues this season [139], according to Wyscout.
We’d take Johnstone. Fabianski has done well this season but not as good as he has done in the past, which is a sign of regression.
He’s also prone to an odd injury, is 36 and in the last year of his contract soon.
A replacement like Johnstone would be a good signing.
In other West Ham news, McAvennie’s also shared his thoughts on the Irons’ bid to land this goal machine from a British club.
