Frank McAvennie annoyed by West Ham failure to sign new striker
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie is baffled by the fact that West Ham failed to sign a striker in January and failed to agree a permanent deal for Jesse Lingard.
Since his loan move to the London Stadium, Manchester United loan star Lingard has tore up the Premier League by scoring nine goals in 10 appearances.
However, there have been some warnings signs about where his future may lie after this season due to how well he’s performed at the London Stadium.
West Ham don’t have an option to sign Lingard permanently so he’s up for grabs for anyone in the summer while Man United may of course decide to keep the England international.
McAvennie has also taken issue with the fact that Sebastien Haller wasn’t replaced in January with Michail Antonio, the club’s only striker, currently injured.
“It’s a big problem for me, not signing another striker. I don’t know why they didn’t get another one,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.
“It’s my biggest problem.
“Now we’re talking about we don’t know whether Lingard will stay and I’m thinking, ‘my god’. I would have signed him early doors.”
West Ham have a huge match against Chelsea at the London Stadium on Saturday.
It pits fourth against fifth in the battle for a spot in next season’s Champions League but the Irons could be without some of their key players for the game.
Craig Dawson is suspended, Declan Rice and Michail Antonio are definitely out and Claret & Hugh claims Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku could miss the game too.
Lingard is reportedly fit [C&H] but still, David Moyes has one massive headache to contend with before kick-off on Saturday.
In other West Ham news, the Irons are interested in this “sensational” goalkeeper playing at a Premier League club.
