Finance Expert reacts as ‘Mega-money’ West Ham United deal on cards

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium...

Dan Plumley has insisted that West Ham would secure a very good deal if they were able to sell naming rights for the London Stadium for £20million-plus.

The Daily Mail reported on 17 November that German giants Allianz were in talks over securing naming rights for the stadium in a “mega-money” deal after Vodafone shelved plans years previously.

The finance expert admitted there was no “one-size-fits-all” policy when it comes to the benchmark of other deals and what they are worth, although this would be great value.

“That’s a good figure if you can get that,” he exclusively told West Ham Zone.

“Again, we’re benchmarking against other examples that we have seen and there is no kind of one-size-fits-all policy about what a naming rights deal is worth, but £20million-plus for West Ham in that market seems a good price if you can get that, for sure.”

Given that West Ham currently rents the London Stadium from LLDC, this is where matters get complicated.

The owners are set to receive £4million of any deal agreed between all parties, but anything above that would then be split equally with the Irons, in what could be a mutually beneficial deal.

Allianz currently has links to Bayern Munich and Juventus, with a move into the Premier League on the cards with the Irons at the forefront of that.
