Exclusive: McAvennie unsure whether Eriksen would fit in West Ham XI
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie is unsure about whether Christian Eriksen would be a worthwhile signing for West Ham amid speculation linking the Inter Milan playmaker to the London Stadium.
Earlier this week, EuroSport reported that the Hammers could make a move to sign the 28-year-old Denmark international in the January transfer window.
Eriksen has failed to shine since joining Inter Milan from Tottenham just under a year ago and McAvennie fails to see how there would be a spot for him in David Moyes’ side at the moment.
“He’s a good player but where’s he going to play? Could he play in a midfield three with [Tomas] Soucek and [Declan] Rice? But then [Said] Benrahma can play in there,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone.
“I don’t know where they would play him. It’s a long season.”
Eriksen has not had a great couple of years.
Towards the end of his time at Spurs, his form dipped massively amid major doubts about his future in North London and he was eventually cast out to the fringes of Jose Mourinho’s starting line-up.
Since joining Inter Milan last January, the Dane’s form has not picked up in the way many would have expected it to and he’s only started four times in all competitions this season for the Serie A giants.
If Moyes feels that he can rekindle Eriksen’s form at the London Stadium then why not have a go at signing him?
McAvennie feels the former Spurs playmaker would struggle to get into West Ham’s midfield but with the Irons now playing a back-four, it means they could go with a midfield three of Eriksen, Rice and Soucek with Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen out wide.
In other West Ham news, Sebastien Haller had a night to forget against Leeds on Friday.
