We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie has paid tribute to the West Ham owners for overseeing a major transformation at the London Stadium while David Moyes has been in charge.
One of the biggest changes made in East London is that co-owner David Sullivan has taken a backseat when it comes to overseeing transfers at the club.
According to the Evening Standard, Sullivan had always played “a prominent role in transfers” at West Ham but “had become disillusioned” during the latter stages of Manuel Pellegrini’s reign as manager.
Moyes’ relationship with Sullivan, in terms of transfers at least, appears to be brilliant with Tomas Soucek, Jarrod Bowen, Vladimir Coufal, Said Benrahma, Craig Dawson and Jesse Lingard thoroughly impressing in claret and blue.
McAvennie is pleased with what he’s seen from Sullivan, who seems to have understood that stepping back from overseeing transfers was the right decision when an experienced Premier League manager like Moyes is in charge.
“I’ve got a lot of time for the owners, David Sullivan and co,” McAvennie told West Ham Zone. “It’s the first time they’ve let a manager buy his own players and it’s working. It’s great and well done to the board for letting David [Moyes] buy and stay out of the way.
“He’s not really bought any duds, there haven’t been any Hallers or Anderson. The people that have come in are hungry and want to play. He’s picking his own players, which is a great thing for West Ham.
“There were a lot of players there who weren’t good enough and coming in, it was like a revolving door but you’ve got to give credit where it’s due.
“Sullivan and Gold have obviously let Moyes pick his own players and it’s for the best and they’re reaping the rewards.”
Sullivan and Gold have received a lot of criticism from West Ham fans over their ownership of the club in recent years but you have to put your hands up and admit that ever since Moyes replaced Pellegrini, they’ve overseen an incredible transformation.
Moyes has been a huge surprise at the club.
He kept us up last season, getting the best out of players that weren’t his and despite limited funds, has signing some really good additions.
Soucek has been absolutely sensational while no one would have predicted how well Dawson would have done since his loan arrival from Watford.
Moyes is getting the absolute best out of everyone and we hope that continues well into the season.
In other West Ham news, Harry Redknapp has been raving about Irons defender Dawson.
