Exclusive: Frank McAvennie shares verdict on West Ham forward Mipo Odubeko
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie has urged West Ham United to start Mipo Odubeko against Sheffield United if Michail Antonio is ruled out on Monday.
David Moyes raised some questions by bringing on the young striker against Manchester United in the FA Cup, only to take him off again later in the defeat.
McAvennie has claimed that it would be better to start Odubeko against the Blades, rather than someone out of position in the final third who could struggle.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said, “I’d rather give him a game then play Yarmolenko who isn’t going to give you anything.
“I don’t think he could do much worst. He’ll be looking at Haller who has gone and Yarmolenko, he’s not got much to improve.
“Good luck to the boy, I always think if you’re not going to buy strikers then you’ve got to play the kids that are there and can play up-front.”
We are all crossing our fingers that Antonio is fit enough to start.
Moyes admitted that he was back out on the grass, and with the game being on Monday, it should be “very close” over his fitness.
If not, this is a massive opportunity for Oduebko, who will chomping at the bit to prove himself after the disappointment of the Manchester United clash.
With European football a real possibility this season though, experience will always be key, and that is exactly what Antonio brings the Irons.
